Patio Materials: 4 Popular Options

A new or updated patio is a great way to spruce up your outdoor space, enhance curb appeal and add value to your home. But the looks, longevity and maintenance needs of your patio are determined by the materials you use to construct it. So what are the key considerations when picking out patio materials?

Let’s discuss four of the most popular types of patio materials and weigh the pros and cons of each.

1. Concrete

Concrete is perhaps the most versatile and affordable option available. Not only can concrete conform to any size or shape, but it’s also easy to install and maintain. Leave it smooth, brush it, stamp it, paint it or decorate it with other material inlays. If concrete cracks, it’ll likely need professional repair or replacement.

2. Stone

Stone provides a natural, rustic look and comes in a variety of options, including flagstone, slate and limestone. Stone’s rough surface provides traction in inclement weather, minimal maintenance is required and damaged stones can be replaced as needed. Stone can be relatively costly, however, due to quarry, transportation and labor costs.

3. Brick

Brick offers a sturdy, long-lasting classic look that can be easily incorporated into any aesthetic. Salvaged brick, if available, is both eco- and budget-friendly. Durable overall, brick can crack under stress of extreme cold, but damaged bricks can be replaced one at a time. However, this porous material is susceptible to moss growth and may require occasional scrubbing.

4. Pavers

Pavers come in a variety of different colors, textures, shapes and sizes. Thanks to their modular, interlocking design, pavers are easily installed, often without grout or mortar, which saves time and money. While pavers can be relatively costly, you can replace them individually should damage occur.

Remember, before you select a material, always consider the size, location and expected climate of the patio space. Need help with your home? Reach out today.
