The season is changing and you’re probably ready to get outdoors and enjoy the sunlight and cooler weather. But why should your fun have to end at sundown? With a few simple outdoor lighting updates, you can create a well-lit outdoor oasis.
Not sure what will work best for your outdoor space? There are plenty of options to choose from. Here are a few ideas to help you get started.
1. String Lights
Flexible in their application, string lights are a great way to add some ambiance. Use them to outline your patio perimeter, wrap them around tree trunks, string them along deck railings or drape them from the roof of your backyard gazebo. And you have a variety of colors and options to choose from, including fairy lights, rope lights, lanterns and Edison bulbs.
2. Ceiling Lights
Adding lights to a porch or covered patio? Recessed lighting provides ample illumination without creating a distraction, while a stylish chandelier can serve as more of a statement piece. And if you live in a hot, humid area, a ceiling fan light can provide a nice breeze.
3. Candles
Candlelight can help create a more intimate or welcoming setting. Choose from a variety of styles — votive, hurricane, floating and even scented candle designs. And if you’re worried about the safety of pets or small children, LED flameless candles are also available.
4. Tiki Torches
Decorative metal or split-bamboo torches are a fun way to light your outdoor space (and help keep bugs away). Of course, open flames require safety precautions. Anchor torches securely in low-activity areas and away from tree limbs and overhanging eaves.
5. Landscape Lighting
Highlight your garden features with traditional floodlighting. Illuminate pathways with solar fixtures or LED path lighting. Build down-lights into stairway walls or the steps themselves to ensure safe passage for visitors.
