Prepare Your Backyard for Summer Get-Togethers in 3 Easy Steps
1. Clean Outdoor Surfaces
Whether you have a deck, porch or patio, a thorough spring cleaning can make a huge difference once summer arrives. Most surfaces can be cleaned using:
- A broom to sweep away loose dirt and debris.
- A cleaning solution (e.g., commercial cleaner or mild dish soap).
- A bristle brush for scrubbing.
- A hose for rinsing.
Consult a professional before using a pressure washer. Some surfaces are more susceptible to damage than others and improper pressure or technique could result in costly damage.
2. Refresh Outdoor Furniture
Dingy outdoor furniture can be revived using soap and water or an appropriate all-surface cleaner. Gently scrub wood or metal with a brush or sponge. Plastic should be wiped down with a damp cloth. Use soap and water on hammocks, seat cushions and other fabrics that aren’t machine washable.
Rusted metal surfaces can be scrubbed with steel wool and touched up with rust-resistant paint or sealer. Surface mold and mildew can be removed using a commercial cleaner, vinegar or diluted bleach. Replace anything that is damaged or decayed beyond repair.
3. Prepare the Grill
Most grills can be cleaned using a wire brush and soap and water, but always check manufacturer recommendations. For a deeper cleaning, soak grill grates overnight in a 2:1 mixture of vinegar and baking soda. Wipe down the exterior with an appropriate surface cleaner (e.g., stainless steel polish).
