3 Easy Home Upgrades to Tackle Today

Wish your house were a bit brighter? Or has the color of your kitchen really irked you lately? Now that you’ve been spending more time at home, you may have noticed a few things you’d like to update.

On the bright side, it could be the perfect time to tackle those DIY upgrades you’ve been putting off. Here are a few simple projects you could complete around the house.

1. Add a fresh coat of paint.

You don’t need much in the way of supplies for this: a paint roller, brushes, a paint tray, and painter’s tape and your choice of paint. To limit your trips to the store, try to calculate how much paint you’ll need in advance. One gallon typically covers 400 square feet, and you may need multiple coats.

Before you start, remove or properly cover furniture and tape over moldings, door and window casings, outlets and light switches. You can paint the trim (taping as necessary) after the walls are dry.

2. Replace light fixtures.

Lighting can give your room that “wow” factor or it can help create a calming effect. As you’re planning your update, take the bulb type and the fixture design into consideration. Would you like pendant lights? A chandelier? Make sure you pick something that’s functional and realistic for your space.

3. Stain your deck.

If the wood has an aging stain, you’ll want to remove it using a stain stripper. Next, spray the wood with cleaner, scrub it with a stiff brush and rinse.

Once dry, tape off the areas you won’t be staining and use the appropriate applicator to apply a thin coat of stain, going with the wood grain and covering all accessible sides of the boards. Let the stain dry and apply additional coats as needed.
